Failure of the upper and lower jaw from developing properly may cause obstructive sleep apnea. This condition, called maxillary hypoplasia and/or mandibular retrognathia/retrusion, often results in a compromised upper airway.
Unfortunately, we may feel the signs of sleep apnea are normal in our children or loved ones:
- Frequent sleep interruptions
- Chronic fatigue
- Morning headaches
The Vivos System is a multi-disciplinary treatment protocol that may permanently treat your sleep apnea and sleep disordered breathing issues by expanding the airway over time (pneumopedics). The treatment, which averages 12-24 months in duration, is non-surgical and non-pharmaceutical.
What is Pneumopedics?
Pneumopedics™ is an emerging field based on physiologic remodeling of the upper airway via treatment-induced changes. The Vivos System incorporates the science of Pneumopedics® in its treatment protocols for addressing maxillary hypoplasia and mandibular Retrusion.
Vivos is investing in ongoing clinical research and clinical trials to expand its existing portfolio of therapeutic-grade biomimetic oral appliances for the treatment of midfacial hypoplasia and/or mandibular retrognathia/retrusion. Vivos Therapeutics is registered with the Federal Drug Administration as a Specification Developer and to date has several medical devices registered:
- Vivos mRNA Appliance: Class II
- Vivos DNA Appliance: Class I (Class II pending)
- Vivos Guides: Class I
HealthyStart & VIVOS Guide Therapy for Kids
HealthyStart dental appliances may help children who start treatment young, address or prevent effects of sleep disordered breathing and avoid the need for braces.
The central issue for many children suffering from the effects of Sleep Disordered Breathing is a compromised airway. When a child’s airway is narrow, underdeveloped or constrictive in any way, the child will struggle to receive enough oxygen at night and may resort to mouth breathing which compounds this issue. Children without proper REM sleep and lack of the necessary oxygen to their brain while sleeping may have trouble in academics such as spelling, math and science.
Symptoms may include:
- Swollen tonsils or adenoids
- Tooth decay
- Bed wetting
- Restless sleep
- Delayed or arrested growth
- Chronic allergies
- The appearance of ADD/ADHD type of behavior
The HealthyStart™ System guides and corrects the eruption of the incoming teeth by naturally expanding the arch to provide room for these teeth, or can straighten the teeth that are already present, and develop proper swallowing. This allows for proper breathing, improved nasal breathing, and an enlarged/expanded airway. With the advancement of the lower jaw, the profile of the child improves to address sleep disordered breathing.
Tiago was a mouth breather with various habits as well as a severe overjet and retrusive lower chin. The Healthy Start system addresses habits and promotes nasal breathing. Treatment continues to develop the lower jaw in a forward and down direction to correct the overjet condition and allow the jaw to develop into proper alignment of the profile.
At nearly half the cost of traditional braces, the HealthyStart™ System is a revolutionary departure from traditional orthodontics into an early, non-invasive, natural way of straightening teeth. It works as well as or better than braces, plastic aligners, surgery, or any other option to achieve a picture-perfect, beautiful smile.
Compared to braces, the HealthyStart™ system works significantly faster because of three significant reasons:
- Healthy Start’s comprehensive and holistic treatment regimen begins early in a child’s life which positively affects and gently guides the developing dentition into the correct alignment before adult teeth become locked into place.
- Healthy Start’s clinically proven technique first corrects a child’s oral habits and helps them to breathe properly through their nose.
- The Healthy Start techniques work simultaneously to correct both the oral habits as well as the child’s orthodontic problems. Braces uses mechanical force to correct the misalignment and each area corrected is done by a slower process requiring a step-by-step sequence.
